How is JAMB Result Calculated?
Knowing how JAMB calculates scores for various subjects can aid in more effective preparation for the exam.
What Is JAMB Score?
This represents the overall score a student achieves after taking the UTME, with scores varying from 0 to 400. This score is pivotal in assessing a student’s chances of securing admission into a desired university, polytechnic, or college of education.
How To Calculate JAMB Score
JAMB poses a total of 180 questions, with the Use of English comprising the majority of these questions (60), and each of the other subjects aside from English language containing 40 questions.
Despite the varying number of questions, all subjects, including English, are weighted equally, contributing to a total score of ONE HUNDRED (100). However, in the Use of English, not all questions are valued equally.
This means that some questions are worth one (1) mark to offset and balance out those questions that are valued at three (3) marks.
How JAMB Is Marked For All Subjects Other Than English
To determine your JAMB score for subjects such as Mathematics, Commerce, Biology, Economics, Physics, etc., other than the Use of English, simply multiply the number of questions you got right by 2.5.
Let us take a look at some examples below:
If a student named Peter, upon completing the JAMB exam, is confident that he answered 32 mathematics questions correctly (which indeed he did), based on the JAMB marking scheme outlined above, what score do you anticipate Peter achieved for this subject?
As expected, by accurately answering 32 questions, Peter would earn 80 marks for Mathematics.
How JAMB Is Marked For Use Of English
Due to the disparity in the marks assigned to each question in JAMB, the method I previously demonstrated cannot be applied to calculate the score.

For Use of English, different questions carries different marks, so you must be smart when answering JAMB Use of English, take for example
…questions on comprehension passages would carry more marks than questions from antonyms and synonyms, so paying close attention to your comprehension passage won’t be a bad idea.
In Summary
To determine your JAMB score for a specific subject, multiply the total number of questions you answered correctly by 2.5. However, note that this method does not apply when calculating the score for Use of English.
