“UTME Registrastion To Be extended by 2weeks” Reps to JAMB
The House of Representatives has instructed the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board to prolong the registration period for the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination by an additional two weeks. This directive came as a result of endorsing a motion concerning urgent public interest, entitled “Need to extend UTME registration by JAMB,” which was proposed by Hassan Shinkafi, during the plenary session in Abuja on Thursday.
Introducing the motion, Shinkafi observed that the UTME registration, which began on January 15, concluded on February 26, 2024. He mentioned that the current harsh economic conditions in the country have prevented numerous families from registering their candidates within this timeframe. He argued that without an extension from JAMB, numerous potential candidates would be unable to register and take part in the examination, leading to a reduced scope and participation in this year’s UTME across Nigeria.Shinkafi highlighted the necessity of legislative action, pointing out that an extension would encourage parents, especially those facing financial hardships, to enroll their children in the examination. Furthermore, the House directed JAMB to extend the registration deadline by an additional two weeks and tasked the relevant Education and Legislative Compliance committees with strictly enforcing this mandate.
