WAEC GCE 2023 2ND SERIES RESULT IS OUT-SEE HOW TO CHECK
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is happy to inform candidates, stakeholders, and everyone else that the results for the WASSCE for Private Candidates (WAEC GCE) 2023-Second Series have been released.
The exam took place in Nigeria from Friday, October 27, 2023, to Wednesday, December 20, 2023. Examiners coordinated and marked candidates’ scripts at seven marking venues in Lagos, Ibadan, Akure, Benin, Enugu, Uyo, and Kaduna from Tuesday, January 16, to Tuesday, January 30, 2024. A total of 4,162 examiners took part in the coordination and marking process.
A total of 85,600 candidates participated in the examination, marking a 10.07% increase from the 2022 entry figure of 77,768 candidates. Out of these, 80,904 candidates sat the examination at 568 centers across the country. Among the candidates, 211 had special needs, including 33 with visual impairment, 21 with impaired hearing, and 30 albinos. All candidates with special needs received adequate support during the examination. Of the total candidates, 39,790 were males, while 41,114 were females, making up 49.18% and 50.82% of the total, respectively.
Of all the candidates who took the exam, 78,419 candidates, accounting for 96.93%, have had their results fully processed and released. Meanwhile, 2,485 candidates, representing 3.07%, are still awaiting the processing of a few of their subjects due to errors on their part. However, steps are underway to swiftly complete the processing so that all affected candidates can have their results fully processed and released soon.
The assessment of candidate performance indicates that among the 80,904 candidates who took the exam:
FORTY-SIX THOUSAND, TWO HUNDRED AND SIXTY-SEVEN (46,267) candidates representing 57.19% obtained credit and above in a minimum of FIVE (5) subjects (with or without English Language and/or Mathematics);
THIRTY-FIVE THOUSAND, EIGHT HUNDRED AND THIRTY (35,830) candidates representing 44.29% obtained credit and above in a minimum of FIVE (5) subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
Of this number, SEVENTEEN THOUSAND, SIX HUNDRED AND THIRTY-ONE (17,631) i.e., 49.21% were male candidates, while EIGHTEEN THOUSAND, ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY-NINE (18,199), i.e., 50.79% were female candidates. The percentage of candidates in this category in WASSCE for Private Candidates, 2021 and 2022 Second Series, that is, those who obtained credit and above in a minimum of five (5) subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, were 48.61% and 42.16% respectively. Thus, there is a marginal increase of 2.13% in performance in this regard.
However, it’s important to note that this analysis cannot be directly compared with that of the WASSCE for School Candidates. Unlike candidates in the WASSCE for School Candidates who are required to take eight or nine subjects, candidates in the WASSCE for Private Candidates have the option to register for eight or nine subjects but are not obligated to take them all. They have the freedom to sit for even just one subject, depending on the specific deficiency they wish to address. Therefore, for them, the examination serves as a means of remediation for existing deficiencies. Considering these factors, it would not be accurate or fair to conclude that the performance in this examination has declined.
The results of 7,192 candidates, which make up 8.89% of the total number of exam takers, are currently withheld due to reported instances of examination malpractice. These cases are under investigation, and the findings will be reviewed by the relevant council committee. Subsequently, the decisions made by the committee will be communicated directly to the candidates involved.
Candidates can verify their results by visiting www.waecdirect.org to confirm their status before accessing their digital certificates, which are available along with their results, on the Digital Certificate platform at www.waec.org.
