What Courses To Choose In UTME/DE and Change Of Courses
What Courses Should I Choose For UTME?
You have the freedom to choose from four different courses, just like you have options for four institutions in UTME or when changing institutions (except for DE applicants who are limited to two universities and two courses).
However, it is very important to make sure that these four courses are related to each other. This will help you avoid choosing the wrong subject combination for your UTME and prevent any issues with getting admission offers in the future.
For example, Gbenga prefers Microbiology as his first choice at the Lagos State University (LASU). The subject combination in JAMB for this will automatically be loaded as:
- English,
- Chemistry,
- Biology, and
- Physics
Inorder to do it the right way, he should also consider courses that have the same subjects listed above. Some examples of such courses are Nursing Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Biochemistry, Anatomy, Physiology, Physiotherapy, and more.
The same goes for the Polytechnics category, courses such as Science Laboratory Technology, Nutrition & Dietetics, Pharmaceutical Technology, Hospitality Management, etc will be the same with the Nursing subject combination listed earlier.
For the Colleges of Education category, if he wants to study any of these courses listed above, subjects such as Biology/Chemistry, Agriculture Science, Chemistry/Integrated Science, Biology/Physics, etc earlier listed is the correct subject combination for him.
If she doesn’t understand this, she might miss out on one or two courses. Each course has its own specific subject combination and requirements, so it’s important to pay attention to them!
You’re Free To Choose The Same Course, For All The Schools, To Avoid Mistakes
Even though the four types of schools in JAMB offer different courses, in many instances, you can consider the same courses for two or three of them, if they are available.
The categories of institutions will have in JAMB and when changing institutions are:
- Universities,
- Polytechnics,
- Colleges of Education, and
- Innovation Enterprises Institutions (IEI)

Choosing courses in the four categories of institutions in UTME/DE
Direct Entry applicants can only choose universities as both their first and second choices! Additionally, The applicants don’t need to worry about the JAMB subject combination because they are not required to write the UTME exam.
All four categories won’t have Law as their courses. Hence, even if you wish to take Law in all, it won’t be possible. In Universities you study Law as a course of study but Polytechnics, colleges of education, and Innovation Enterprises Institutions (IEIs) don’t!
Luckily, you have the option to choose two universities as your first and second choices. You can even select Law as your choice for both universities if they offer it, whether it’s a combination of Federal university and another federal university or a Federal and any state university.
However, it is important to note that when you’re filling in your third choice, you have the option of choosing a polytechnic or a college of education there, you should also choose a course that relates to Law or aligns with the Law subject combination in your JAMB.
For most Universities, the right subject combination for Law includes the following:
- English,
- Literature,
- Government,
- And any other Art/Social Science subject (e.g. Economics, CRS, IRS, Yoruba, etc.).
While in Polytechnics or Colleges of Education related courses (with aligned subjects) may include:
- Mass Communication
- Library and Information Science
- Local Government Studies
- English/Social Studies
- History/Yoruba
- English/Political Science
The idea is, since most students focus on their first and second choices more, you can go for the same course – so you don’t make a mistake in your subject combination.
Study The JAMB Brochure Of The Course You Want To Study
The official JAMB brochure not only provides a list of schools and courses in Nigeria but, more importantly, it also gives information about the subject combinations that each course, as specified by each institution, will accept.
You Won’t Be Able To Choose A Course Unless a School Has It
It is in the habit of admission seekers to just imagine schools and imagine their courses too which is fantastic! but it doesn’t work like that. No school has all the courses there is.
You have to be sure that your university, polytechnic, or college of education of your choice has your desired courses before going to CBT centre for the UTME/DE registration or change of courses.
This is important because some CBT centers may not pay attention to your choices and subject combination. If they can’t find the course you want under a school, they might select any other course for you without considering the subjects you wrote in JAMB or are about to write.
This is why to save yourself some future headaches, look for your schools of interest and their courses to be sure they have what you’re looking for.
Conclusion
Choosing the right courses is not just about the universities, polytechnics, or colleges that offer them. Candidates must also be careful about the subjects they need to combine for UTME and the subjects required for the SSCE exams.
