This blog post is here to give you a comprehensive understanding of the list of Universities that accept combined results like WAEC and NECO, WASSCE and WAEC GCE, WAEC and NABTEB, and even NECO and NABTEB. We’ll also guide you on the best approach!
If you know about the WAEC and other O’ level grading, you’ll see that the lowest passing grade for admission is C6. Grades lower than this (like D7, E8, F9 in WAEC) won’t be accepted for admission.
However, it doesn’t mean that if you took eight subjects in WAEC and got an F9, D7, E8 in one, you won’t be admitted. Not at all. This is where the concepts of Core, Mandatory, and Optional subjects become important. It is very crucial you have a basic understanding of these terms so you don’t make a mistake while choosing your subject combination which will eventually reduce your chances of getting your desired course of study or institution as the case may be.
Getting a bit confusing, isn’t it? Don’t worry, I’ll explain more.
Out of these three (Core, Mandatory, and Optional), the most vital ones are your Core subjects. This is important because the university you’re applying to will always check them to make sure you meet the requirements for your desired course.
If you’re a science student, your Core subjects include English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics (though you can choose Agric instead of Biology if you do not want to further in Health Science).
You should only worry if you have problems with your Core subjects. Let me give you a typical example; Suppose a student wants to study Pharmacy at the University of Lagos and has these WAEC grades: English B2, Mathematics C6, Biology C4, Chemistry A1, Physics C5, Economics D7, Computer B3, and Agricultural Science C4.
This student doesn’t need to be worried at all. The D7 in Economics won’t matter since Economics is an Optional subject for Pharmacy students, but if there’s a D7 in English, Biology, or any of the other core subjects, then that’s where the problem lies.
So, does this mean that if a student gets D7, E8, or F9 in WAEC, they have no chance of getting admission anymore?
That is very good question, because this now leads us to the only solution for students in this situation; which is combining different O’ level results for admission.
Simply put, this is when a student puts together two O’ level results (like combining WAEC with NECO, NABTEB, or their GCE counterparts) to make one result stronger with the help of the other.
If you have gone through JAMB brochure containing all courses and their requirements on JAMB IBASS (which is the online version of JAMB brochure) you will see that most courses O’ level requirement is:
You are allowed combine the following O’level results for admission to any University in Nigeria for all courses:
Any of these combinations will definitely work, but there’s a particular method to follow, which I’ll explain to you shortly.
To use any of the combinations mentioned above, it’s important that the result you are combining with the other already has that subject passed, Let’s take a look at some examples below.
If Femi got English B2, Mathematics C6, Biology C4, Chemistry A1, Physics E8 in WAEC, and also did well in Physics in his NECO exam “that same year”, he can confidently put together both his WAEC and NECO results for admission.
So, to make this work, you are expected to have at least a credit in the O’ level exam you wish to use to supplement the other, any grade less than this cannot be used as two sittings.
Now, let’s dive right into the main focus of this post, Not all Nigerian universities accept two sets of results for admission. While some universities may allow it, it is not accepted for all courses. For instance, the University of Ibadan (UI) allows two sittings for some courses, but not for courses like Medicine and Surgery, Pharmacy, and so on.
To make it easier for you, I have made a list of Universities that Accept Combined Result for admission into various courses, but I will still advise you go through JAMB Brochure to check the O’ level requirement for specific courses in the University you want to study in.
You can access Jamb brochure through JAMB IBASS (Integrated brochure and syllabus system) and this is done by searching for “JAMB IBASS” and the search results brings out the JAMB website bearing this URL “https://www.jamb.gov.ng/ibass” where you can get your information from.
Below is a list of Nigerian Universities That Accept Combined Result for Admission:
So, you won’t face an issue applying to any of the universities mentioned above with a combined result from two sittings. The only thing to keep in mind is that a few of these universities have specific courses where this rule might not apply.
If you applied to study a course like:
I suggest checking the JAMB Brochure to be sure.
